Ötzi, the real ice man
The highlight of Bolzano’s ‘Alto Adige Archeology Museum’ is definitely the 5300 years old mummy of a man discovered in 1991 at the Hauslabjoch Pass. The mummy can be viewed from the window of the refrigerated cell where it is now kept. The display also includes many other findings and a thorough documentation of the ongoing research on the ‘ice-man’.
The museum explains the development of South Tyrol from the Stone Age until the eight century (Carolingian age) by means of multimedia installations, interesting findings and informative posters. The Ötzi museum is one of Italy’s most successful museums. Besides the permanent collections, several temporary exhibitions make the ice-man museum definitely worth a visit!
